Weekend Bike Rides

The best thing about riding a bike around the city is that you discover new neighborhoods, sometimes even fun new spots in neighborhoods you know well. The other weekend I discovered the cutest little coffee house in Andersonville across from an amazingly curated antique shop {Roost}.

Progress in the back room

This past weekend this guy and I spent what felt like endless hours working on our back room. When we moved in it was a nursery with white carpet. Our drooly bulldog, of course, likes to spend the majority of her time back there. The white carpet had to go. So, the boy invited/begged some of his handy friends and my little brother to help install new wood flooring. The transformation was incredible. This all happened about six months ago. Life got in the way and finally, this past weekend he and I got to the base boards and molding.

The finished product

The before

The chocolate wood with the bright white molding and dolphin fin gray paint is everything I hoped it would be and more. So happy with it.

As you may have noticed, I've been a bit obsessive with industrial-style lighting. The problem: everything that I found fell into the $200-$500 range. I came across this one at IKEA for $60! Perfect for our tiny desk space (doesn't take up any room on the surface) and it can swing over to the chair behind it and become a reading lamp.
Here is a little taste of what the room will one day be. It's not quite there yet, but well on its way. I'm picturing lots of textures, in all shades of gray and white. With some natural wood here and there. More to come!

Eat like a veg

I've been a vegetarian for quite some time now {actually a pescatarian, meaning I am a vegetarian with the exception of fish}. I often get questions about my diet - what do I eat. So, I thought I'd share a few of my Summer time go-to's.

* Grilled Portabella burgers with pesto, grilled red pepper and feta
* Grilled Fish {halibut, tuna, swordfish, salmon, etc.} with roasted garlic, rosemary fingerling potatoes
* Quinoa salad with roasted asparagus, peppers, onion, zucchini, summer squash and pine nuts {add a little lemon juice and olive oil, also great for lunch the next day}
* Omelets with fresh herbs from the garden, tomatoes and goat cheese
* Couscous with grilled vegetables and a cucumber, dill yogurt sauce {super easy to make - greek yogurt, lemon juice, cucumber, dill - great left over for dipping veggies}

Really, I like to eat what's in season. I try to make it to our farmers market once a week and grab what looks good. A great big salad with lots of ingredients is always refreshing in the summer. This week I made one with arugula, chickpeas, avocado, cucumber, green onion, artichoke and sun dried tomatoes. I always make my own dressing. Here's my go-to:

* Olive Oil
* Balsamic
* Lemon Juice
* Salt & Pepper
* Dijon Mustard

And that, my friends, is how you eat like a veg

GT Fish & Oyster

Before heading to the lake, we decided to kick off fourth of July weekend at the appropriately nautical-themed GT Fish and Oyster. Not only is the decor to die for, the food was INCREDIBLE. The menu is small plates, split into cold and hot - think tapas, Nantucket style. The lobster roll was unreal. Huge chunks of lobster in toasted brioche. Seriously, I have been craving this thing ever since.

Love this beach-house inspired chair.

The lighting was gorgeous throughout the restaurant. A mix between industrial and cottage-style.

Check out those fresh oysters! We got to watch the staff shuck oysters while sipping cocktails at the bar.

I highly recommend a visit.
